Top 5 Reasons People Don't Recycle Their Junk or Scrap Car

Have you ever had a neighbour who had an unsighly eyesore on their driveway that just bothered you?  A former neighbour of mine had one and it was darkly comic how it worsened over time.  First was the broken driver's windshield covered by a garbage bag.  Then one flat tire was soon followed by another flat.  Rust reared its ugly head and took over the wheel wells.  And the climax was when there was a dent in the rear bumper, most likely caused by their second car trying to squeeze out of their 1.5 car lane driveway.

Everyone has their reasons for delaying the inevitable; here are our customer's Top 5 reasons:

  1. I just need to replace the transmission/brakes/tires/shocks and the car will be up and running again.
  2. I really love this car, it has many memories and I can't get rid of an old friend.
  3. Tinkering under the hood is my hobby.
  4.  I can make more money from selling car parts off it; I just need to advertise on Kijiji next week.
  5. My son is getting his driver's license soon, and I'd rather have him drive this clunker rather than my own car.

In the majority of cases drivers are procrastinating and avoiding the inevitable.  If it requires repairs, make sure it is cost effective, then do it!  Sure, your car is old - but you love it. It even has a name! However, you need to realize the cold, hard truth: it may be time to let it go.  It may be a fun hobby to fuss around with your car, but isn't driving it an even greater pleasure?  If you have a lot of time on your hands and want to deal with posting ads, then haggling the prices and deal with bargain hunters, you may make a little profit.  But what about your time and effort?  Doesn't that cost money too?  What is the opportunity cost?  Also remember that you will also get less for your scrap car from the salvage yard company.  We all get paid by the amount of metal in your car and will not pay a lot for your shell.  We get the last excuse a lot too.  Isn't your son or daughter's safety from driving a newer generation vehicle worth a lot more to you?

I am totally agree with in this point. It's almost that reason that's why people don't recycle their junk car!
