Clunker Heaven - Our Environmental Commitment

Clunker Heaven believes that a strong emphasis on environmental values is the only way to create a sustainable scrap car business plan.  We are environmental leaders in the environmentally friendly scrap car recycling business, which is a multi-billion dollar sector and an essential partner in the steel and automotive industries.

Around 77% of the typical 1999 scrap vehicle, by weight, is made up of metal, but nearly 97% of your scrap car is recyclable. This is primarily sheet metal, and has slowly declined due to the increased use of non-ferrous metals, composites and plastics in newer vehicles.

Scrap Car Component Breakdown

The recycling process begins when your vehicle is brought to us.  The second ‘R’ of the three ‘R’s – Reuse – is our mantra as we take out parts that are reusable or resellable.  All engine fluids, brake fluids, fuel and glycols (coolant/antifreeze) are drained from the vehicle and stored for recycling purposes to protect the environment.  Batteries have their lead and plastics recycled, and acids neutralized. Tires are removed and recycled for their rubber content.  Examples of reuse include rubber crumb in asphalt paving, insulation materials or floor mats.  Glass can be used as spare parts or melted down and used in new glass manufacturing.  Mercury switches are removed from  vehicles that still possess them and are collected via our Switch Out program. Gas tanks are removed and recycled separately.  The engine itself is extracted, as it is more valuable than the rest of the car as scrap metal.

The remainder of the junk car is flattened and taken to a scrap yard dealer.  The shredding process takes place, where the cars are shredded and broken into three categories:  steel and iron, nonferrous metal, and non-metal scrap.  Each ton of metal extracted produces about 500 pounds of shredder residue (metal oxides, polymers, polyurethane foams, glass and dirt), which is sent to landfills.  The steel and iron is then shipped to steel mills, where it is melted down to produce new steel.  Non-ferrous metals like aluminum are also smelted into raw materials.

Clunker Heaven is a responsible environmental auto wrecker and your guarantee that your scrap car does not cause any further environmental degradation.  The raw materials recovered may be reborn in the very next car you purchase!

Fast Environmental Facts...

  • Over 80% of the entire vehicle by weight is reused, re-manufactured or recycled.
  • Recycled parts save an estimated 80 million barrels of oil annually that would be required to produce new replacement parts.
  • Auto recycling provides about 40% of the ferrous metal for the scrap processing industry across North America.
  • Substituting low-sulphur scrap metal for high-sulphur raw ore can reduce a steel mill's air pollution by as much as 86% percent and water pollution by 76%.
  • The amount of toxic oils and fluids safely reclaimed by auto recyclers is equivalent to eight Exxon Valdez disasters every year!
